On Sunday, while the pastor was speaking, I was thinking about someone being spiritually hungry. With real hunger it doesn’t matter who you are or how much money you have, you will get hungry. When someone is hungry they seek out food. For the average person they can just go to their fridge or pantry and grab something. But for someone so desperate for food, they may go searching for food in a trashcan. We see it all the time with homeless people, they dig through dumpsters in search of something to fill that need. The hunger pains become so great that they will do what they “know how” to fulfill that pain.
Sadly though the world is filled with people digging in spiritual dumpsters to fulfill this hunger that can only be filled up by Christ alone. People all around us are starving and desperate for food. They will seek it from whatever options comes first only to find they are still hungry. The jobs, the social media, the relationships, or the money doesn’t fix it. They walk away from this “meal” still starving.
Just as a food bank has the opportunity to feed those in need, we as believers have the opportunity to “feed” those in need. When my kids were younger they loved going to Costco for all the free samples. It was a great way to try some yummy food to see if it was worth buying. If you have no idea on how to start “feeding” the spiritual hungry, start by offering them samples. Smile to the people in the store, let someone with a small load go before you in line, pay for someone’s drink order….Be kind to your enemies…these are bite size examples of Christ. Serve others with a happy heart, especially to those that might already demand to be first with the selfish attitude. That is a bite size example of Christ.
We do not all have to serve up an entire meal/message to every single person searching for God. We just need to be ready to give out bite size samples and pray that they want more of what you are offering. A relationship with Jesus, the Son of God, is the only thing that will fulfill the hungry.
